Nearly 5,000 Students Get Free School Supplies from Ready to Learn

DSC_0237More than 4,800 local students have basic school supplies from the 2017 Ready to Learn (RTL) effort during the initial back-to-school period. Many more children will benefit as social service providers continue to seek assistance for clients throughout the year.

Between June and August, community donors statewide raised more than $16,000 and 14 pallets of general school supplies. Combined, this gave approximately 3,600 school-aged students the tools they needed to start the year on the right foot.

Part of this effort is due to our primary banking partner American Savings Bank, who accepted donations at all of its branches statewide. KITV’s annual school supply drive, School Tools, also helped raise awareness and donations.

During the three-month period, individuals and groups volunteered to help with many program logistics, collectively logging more than 1,500 hours. This additional support helped the program run smoothly and efficiently.

Every year strong community partnerships are vital to helping students. We’re fortunate to have supporters, community partners and volunteers ready and willing to give these students the best chance at a good education.

Thanks to all for lending a helping hand! Remember, something as small and easily overlooked as a simple backpack filled with schools supplies could inspire hope in those who face daily struggles and helps students pursue their educations.
