Ready to Learn

Ready to Learn (RTL) provides keiki — Grades K-12 — across Hawai‘i with basic school supplies needed for their education.

Ready to Learn Logo-BlackNo child should go without basic supplies that make their educational experience productive. Many students prefer to skip classes instead of returning with last year’s used supplies and backpacks. They may feel ashamed for having to go without the basic supplies or experience being different from their peers. Without support and encouragement, these students may begin to fall behind in school or develop problematic behaviors that negatively impact their learning and progress.

Each year, RTL partners with social service agencies across Hawai‘i and generous donors from the community to help prepare thousands of local children for the upcoming school year.

In 1999, the late Senator Daniel and Maggie Inouye initiated the RTL program in collaboration with Helping Hands Hawai‘i. The program has become very successful over the years, and in 2005 Helping Hands Hawai‘i took over statewide administration of this initiative. With the support of many donors in the community, the program helps over 7,000 students statewide each year.
